The industry of freight carrying has become very popular as the services have vastly improved since they were first developed, especially the air freight carrying services for those deliveries that needs to arrive as soon as possible. From the earlier forms of air freight carrying there is now a lot of technology that goes into the air freight carriers making sure an accurate record of the different cargo is kept and also the route planning.
As well as the documentation and record keeping changes there have also been a great amount of changes in the actual aeroplanes used to transport the goods as technology in the area has developed they have been able to adapt the vehicles to fit the purpose of freight carrying perfectly. There are many different models of vehicle used for this purpose and many different companies that provide this service, below are some examples of services provided, how the service has changed and the vehicles now used in the freight industry;
- The history – The first ever air freight run was completed in 1910 the plane used had been modified to hold the cargo instead of passengers and was very basic. This first amount of freight transported was not that great in volume and it wasn’t until the late 1920’s that they started to ship large quantities of freight via air transport. The growth in air freight carrier’s popularity was very apparent by the 1930’s when it was averaged that 1 million pounds of cargo was transported in that year by air. With this great growth in such a short period of time it provided a great opportunity for those working in the industry to grow and develop along side its popularity.
The air craft – The models used have changed from passenger carrying planes into air craft with no seating to accommodate the cargo specifically. This was a very basic form of air freight carrier and the changes over the years have meant that the quality of service has improved as the vehicles have. With the vehicles now being purpose built it means the goods can be held more securely and also because they have set storage areas they can keep a better record of the goods, where they are stored and where they are going.- Technology advances – The technological advances in the equipment used for air freight transport now makes it easier than ever for the deliveries to run smoothly and on time. Of course they have all the safety equipment a normal plane would have for air traffic, weather conditions etc. but they also have other equipment that aids them with things such as keeping track of the stock position on board the plane and routing systems that show the most fuel, and there fore cost, efficient routes for them to follow this benefiting the customer because they can save money on the final cost.
