When you want to become a forklift truck driver there are different things you have to think about before taking the route down towards it being your chosen career. It is wise to gage what is expected of you and what you will require qualification wise before furthering yourself in the field.
So here are some examples of qualifications you can take, skills you will need and interests you should have;
- Qualifications – There are some mandatory qualifications you will have to take before even going near forklift trucks then there are the courses that further your knowledge in the area these include; NVQ Level 2 in Specialised Plant and Machinery Operations, Distributive Operations Level 1 or 2 etc. As well as gaining entry this way you could also get access to this as a career by starting on an apprenticeship at a younger age, although most places require you to be over the age of 18 for insurance reasons. As well as these courses that will gain you access to the career originally there are also courses that you will be required to take through out the time you work with such machinery, this is to make sure that you can constantly control the machinery safely.
- Skills – Your skill set should include the ability to work quickly and safely always, this is because the machinery you are working with is very dangerous if not handled properly at all times and it is generally the carelessness of the person controlling the machinery that causes accidents. As well as this you should be able to judge weights and distances easily, because you will have to think about whether you can lift
certain objects because of the weight and be able to judge the distances because the objects are held so far in front of you it will be dangerous if you can’t judge the distances accurately when turning around corners and other such manoeuvres. Some other abilities you should have include; being able to work and act mature whilst working with any of the machinery, you should have the ability to work alone but also as part of a team when may be required and finally you should be able to follow written instructions easily and also keep strict records of the use of the machinery.
There are other things of course that will affect whether or not you would be successful in this particular job but these are the basic requirements that should give you a good insight to whether or not it would be right for you.
