This type of work requires a lot of organisation as you need to arrange the most cost effective, and time saving method for transporting the goods to their destination. The way in which you do this is to think about whether it would be best to transport it by sea, air or road, it will differ each time dependant on the cargo you are transporting. If considering this as a career you will have to take into consideration all the required duties and responsibilities, some of these include;
- You will be required to work out the weight and so there fore the cost of transporting the goods for the customer. You will more than likely have set rates for certain weights and volumes of cargo, so you will simply have to measure the cargo they want transporting and then convert that into the final cost for the customer.
- You need to be able to arrange the transportation of the goods with a carrier company. This will mean you will need to know the exact measurements and weight of the cargo so you can give them a detailed description, and they can then give you an accurate price. Once you have the quote you want to accept you will then have to confirm the details with the carrier company.
- Things like insurance, duties and taxes will have to be over seen and sorted out by you, this means you will need to ensure you have the right type and amount of insurance for the goods being transported and you will have to make sure the goods get through customs ok and any taxes or duties incurred through customs will have to be settled under your supervision.
- You will have to be computer literate as you will be required to keep a detailed record of the different cargos being transported and on what date. So once an arrangement has been made you would need to log it as soon as possible so the arrangements can start to be planned.
As well as all these different responsibilities there are a certain number of things your employer may require you to have such as qualifications a couple of the qualifications include; Certificate of International Trade, Certificates in Logistics and Transport. Although these qualifications are obviously desirable to employers they aren’t necessarily required and many people start out in the industry as an apprentice.
