Just as with any kind of freight service there are plenty of companies in the sea freight industry. There is however different positives and negatives with choosing sea freight dependant on which company you decide to go with. The industry has developed greatly since it very first started in the 19th Century and here are some of the different examples of how the industry has vastly improved over the years and what you should check for with each company;
- Security – There needs to be a certain amount of security on the containers whilst in transport obviously either against theft but also the main factor which is the weather. At sea the weather gets a lot worse than it does on land when there are storms and rain, so this is why they need to be weather proof. As well as protection against the weather many containers also have safety features to protect it in situations such as if the container were to fall in the sea many have features that mean they won’t actually sink, meaning if the container were to then wash up safely there would be more of a chance the goods inside would not be that damaged. So before you choose a freight company to transport your goods you may be best investigating what kind of security and safety measures they have in place on board the freight carrier during transportation.
Buy or rent – There is now a choice between whether you want to buy your own sea freight container or if you want to rent one off one of the many companies. One of the main reasons that people decide to rent rather than buy their own freight containers is because of the fact they have to pay a charge to have the container transported back to them, where as if they rent one once they have the goods transported they don’t have to worry about getting the container back because that will be the responsibility of the company that owns them.- Record keeping – Due to the fact that there are now so many containers that can fit on the container ships there are now high technology computer systems in place that ensure each container is stored and routed correctly to ensure it reaches its destination on time and in the best condition possible. This is why from when the booking for the container to be transported is made the freight company will make a note of exactly where it will be stored on the ship and where it’s final destination is and what route it will take to get there.
